THE SPLENDID SETTING OF THE SCALA DEI TURCHI FRAMES PUNTA GRANDE BEACH WHICH OUR HOUSE OVERLOOKS.
Only a few steps down the driveway and you are on the beach. There is also a bathing establishment very close by (50 meters,) with a restaurant-bar and musical entertainment on Sunday afternoons. The sea is particularly suitable for families because it is shallow and sandy and lends itself to the amusement of children. Lovers of rock are just a few meters’ walk from coves and cliffs of particular beauty, in particular, the Scala dei Turchi, a brilliantly white cliff that rises above the sea, in the shape of a natural staircase between two sandy beaches. Its name derives from past raids of Saracen pirates, who found shelter there. At 500 meters (walking along the shore to the east) are the remains of a Roman Villa. In the small adjacent establishment, you can practice spinning, zumba, beach volleyball and water aerobics. In just a few minutes by car, you can reach the town of Porto Empedocle, to which in 2003 was added the name Vigata, the imaginary place where Inspector Montalbano, the protagonist of Camilleri’s novels, lives. Lucky tourists may meet the famous writer in the streets of his home town. Continuing towards Agrigento, you will find Caos, the birthplace of the great Pirandello. A few more kilometers and you will be immersed in the Valley of the Temples, a thrilling excursion into history and the origins of Western culture.
